The New Colombo Plan Alumni Ambassadors Program supports alumni from each Australian university, including a designated First Nations Alumni Ambassador, to promote the New Colombo Plan and the value of Indo-Pacific study and work placements.

Anna Husband is a passionate third-year Occupational Therapy student eager to make a difference in others lives. She is always open to learning and being challenged, and seeks out new opportunities and conversations. Anna is particularly interested in working with Indigenous communities in rural Australia, and has experience working in Timor-Leste as part of the NCP. She is grateful for the opportunity to have learned from Timor-Leste culture and people, and is motivated to give back to those communities in the future.

In 2022, Mitchell was awarded the NCP Mobility grant to travel to Vietnam, where he learned about sustainable water practices and the Vietnamese culture. This opportunity inspired him to mentor young people and encourage them to take advantage of educational opportunities.

Rebecca is completing a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at the Australian National University. After completing a research project in Myanmar in 2019, Rebecca developed an interest in international development policy in Southeast Asia. She went on to complete work experience at NGOs in Myanmar and Cambodia and travel throughout the region. Through these experiences, she developed a strong interest in Australia’s foreign policy in the region. She became committed to a career in international development, a passion she continued to pursue through her New Colombo Plan scholarship.
As an NCP scholar, Rebecca completed an exchange at the University of Tokyo, studying transnational law, post-conflict legal reform, and Japanese foreign economic policy. She undertook Burmese language training in Thailand and interned with The Asia Foundation’s specialist team on conflict. In Australia, Rebecca has worked in government, at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Agriculture, Water, and Environment, and in the private sector in corporate law and consulting. As an Alumni Ambassador, Rebecca is committed to making the NCP Program accessible to students from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and interests.

Grace is in her final year of a double degree in Laws/Politics and International Relations at the University of Canberra. She is passionate about intersectional human rights issues. She is currently completing her undergraduate thesis on the attrition of sexual assault victims and the need for feminist-informed legal reform.
In 2021, Grace was awarded an NCP Scholarship to study at the Singapore Management University (SMU). While at SMU, she completed courses in Chinese law and culture, feminist politics and the sociological analysis of political violence. She also concurrently completed language training at Linda Mandarin. After completing her study component, she interned with a small, grassroots Singaporean organisation called ‘Project X’. Project X is the only non-profit organisation in Singapore that provides social, emotional and health services to people working in the sex industry.
Grace has also been awarded other personal and professional development opportunities such as the ‘Jacq Burridge Scholarship 2022’ and the ‘Indigenous Cultures and the Environment Study Tour 2022’. Grace was one of five NCP scholars to participate in the pilot study tour; an opportunity which equipped her to be a culturally informed ambassador for Australia overseas, as well as a better citizen and ally to Indigenous people.

Ryland completed the NCP mobility project while undertaking a Bachelor of Psychology (honours) at Charles Sturt University. In 2022, the project was undertaken in Cambodia, focusing on the field of society and culture. During this opportunity, Ryland furthered his understanding of applied psychotherapies, while building connections with international non-for-profit organisations. This inspired Ryland to further his psychological studies and promote targeted international aid.
Ryland is passionate about implementing peak performance states into occupational, educational, and recreational environments. While completing his honours dissertation on flow and clutch states within adventure recreation activities, Ryland has expanded his professional connections within the sports and psychology field. He seeks a career focused on enhancing student productivity, workplace efficiency, and sports performance with the aspiration to apply these findings to the Indo-Pacific region.

Sophie is in her final year of studying a Bachelor of Communication majoring in Journalism at Charles Sturt University. Sophie is passionate about using journalism as a tool to share marginalised stories and connect communities through storytelling.
As a 2023 NCP scholar, Sophie completed a semester of study at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. She also undertook an internship with the Fiji Sun, one of Fiji’s national newspapers. Sophie was mentored by Rosi Doviverata, the founder of Women in Media Fiji, and learned how Fijian media is promoting inclusiveness and diversity within the industry. Sophie is looking forward to sharing her learnings from the Pacific, especially with those involved in the social sciences, and encouraging others to pursue the NCP scholarship.
Paul Kaletsis

Paul is a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts (Development Studies and Culture Change) graduate from MQ who undertook internships and language training in Vanuatu and New Caledonia. He assisted in the coordination of UNDP-funded disaster resilience projects, developed grant proposals and business plans for grassroots NGOs, and designed alumni engagement strategies to enhance the impact of The Pacific Community’s ‘Pacific Fisheries Leadership Programme’.
With his honours thesis analysing Pacific perspectives on statehood under international law, Paul is committed to building mutually beneficial relationships between the Pacific and Australia at both government-to-government and people-to-people levels, enhancing Australia’s understanding of Pasifika cultures and collaborating on regional issues.
Paul is also an alumnus of the U.S Government’s 2023 Young Pacific Leaders Programme in Guam. Additionally, he serves as the Manager of Events at the Pacific-Australia Youth Association Inc (PAYA), establishing partnerships and organising annual Youth Leadership Summits for Pasifika and Australian youth. In 2024 he will step into the role as the inaugural Chair and President of PAYA, leading strategic direction to enhance connections between youth across the Pacific-Australia region.
Ziyan Tejani

Ziyan is undertaking a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Politics at Macquarie University. He has been active on-campus, enjoying intervarsity debating and fulfilling roles as President of the Macquarie University Politics Society and Student Representative. With a keen interest in policy and international relations, alongside his study, he has worked at several think tanks and advocacy organisations and received awards for his community service, leadership and volunteering.
As an NCP scholar in 2023, Ziyan spent a semester at the National University of Singapore studying modules in Political Science and International Relations and lived on-campus where he engaged regularly in student activities. He also completed an intensive Mandarin language course at a language school and a series of internships and mentorships pertaining to policy and global affairs, with a focus on Southeast Asia. A key highlight of his work to date is assisting with the authorship of a book analysing Singapore’s governance.
Ziyan’s time abroad provided him with a deep understanding and appreciation for the rich history and diverse cultures of Asia. He is optimistic about Australia’s future within the Indo-Pacific and intends to help strengthen regional engagement throughout his career.
Torryn Ebejer

Torryn completed studies in Psychology online through the University of New England. His thesis looked at language changes on Reddit across major Australian cities during COVID-19. Throughout his study, Torryn volunteered widely in community-based organisations, emergency services, and for development causes.
His desire to learn about different models of multiculturalism and interfaith dialogue led Torryn to apply for – and be awarded – an NCP Scholarship. He hopes to bring the experiences from working, studying, and living in Malaysia to the practice of psychology in Australia.
As a student in regional NSW, Torryn saw a stark contrast in the opportunities and expectations between his metropolitan and regional peers. He believes in equal opportunity for all and joined the NCP Alumni Ambassador program to help bring the transformative opportunity of the NCP to more regional and rural students.
Eric Duong

Eric is currently pursuing a Bachelors of International Studies and Law at the University of New South Wales and specialises in Inclusive Development and Politics of the Indo-Pacific.
He is also an Australia Vietnam Leadership Dialogue (AVLD) supported volunteer at the social enterprise VietHarvest whose mission is to reduce food wastage by redistributing otherwise quality food to nourish underserved communities in Vietnam.
As a 2023 NCP Mobility grant recipient, Eric undertook a year-long exchange at Kyunghee University in South Korea. It was at this institution where he was able to pursue his passion for Inter-Korean relations and study Asian Foreign Policy in real-time. It was with the support of the NCP Program that Eric had the opportunity to engage in multiple university-level Model United Nations Conferences, and make meaningful connections with a diversity of people abroad.
Undertaking an NCP supported exchange has reinforced Eric’s desire to deepen Australia’s diplomatic connections to Asia and promote overall regional development. He is thus committed to sharing his experiences and encouraging future generations of recipients take full advantage of the opportunities abroad.

Emer’s upbringing in Gulargambone, NSW, instilled a deep understanding of the significance of accessible educational opportunities, especially for students in regional areas.
The crucial support from Wesley College acted as a transformative catalyst, bridging the geographical divide to her higher education. This support propelled Emer towards her graduation with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Politics & International Business.
In 2023, being granted the NCP Mobility grant was a turning point. It facilitated her enriching study and work experience in Jakarta, particularly at the Institute of Sustainability and Agility. This exposure inspired her to return to Australia, channeling her expertise into agricultural sustainability with Certified Sustainable and Organic Systems and Solutions.
Driven by her passion for empowering regional and rural students to explore all avenues of opportunity including the NCP, Emer now holds the position of Associate Director of Academics at Wesley College, ensuring her commitment to this cause endures and thrives.
Mikyla Peters

Mikyla is a final-year undergraduate student studying a dual degree in Electronics and Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Newcastle. She is currently working as an Embedded Systems Engineer for a local vehicle electrification business.
She was awarded a 2021 NCP Scholarship for Taiwan, which she completed throughout 2022 and 2023. During her scholarship, she studied Mandarin and Engineering at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, as well as an internship with Infosys in Bangalore, India.
Mikyla is passionate about the role engineering plays in the quest towards a sustainable future, and is curious to see the impact that electronics has in this space. In the future, she hopes to continue working in the decarbonisation sector.
Anthony Cao

Anthony is a dedicated business student majoring in Accounting and Finance at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He also works as an accountant at a boutique accounting firm in the city.
A distinguished recipient of the NCP Mobility Grant, Anthony represented UTS and Australia in Vietnam, fostering international relationships between the two countries. He gained a deep appreciation for the rapidly growing economy of Vietnam and its bilateral ties with Australia. This experience allowed him to witness firsthand strengthening bonds through growing trade activity and the evolution of international relations between both countries.
He is deeply involved in volunteer work, serving as a facilitator for UN Youth Australia and has consulted for Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. Passionate about community upliftment and international affairs, Anthony aspires to use his skills and experiences to make a meaningful impact in the fields of accounting and finance.
William Jamieson

William is studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) (Honours)/Laws at the University of Wollongong.
In 2021, William completed a virtual NCP mobility project with the National University of Singapore. In 2022, he commenced his NCP Scholarship in the Pacific nations of Fiji and Kiribati. This included a semester of study at the University of the South Pacific and internships with the Kiribati Ministry of Finance (Climate Finance), Leadership Fiji, and GHD. He has continued working at GHD, assisting with the delivery of the Australian Government’s ‘Team Up’ program in the Pacific.
William also completed language training with the Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Disabilities and the Retired Fijian Teachers Association. Through these experiences and his involvement with student and community initiatives, such as Tungaru Youth Action, he gained invaluable insight into pressing issues within the region and the innovative, localised, and impactful responses to overcoming significant environmental and social challenges. William aspires to establish a career within this area and is excited by the opportunity to further his involvement with the NCP community.

Jade is currently completing her final year of a Bachelor of Branded Fashion degree at Torrens University Australia. Jade is a consistent presence on campus, helping organise and run events for students to be involved in her University’s Student Representative Council (SRC).
Jade was awarded a 2022 New Colombo Plan Scholarship, and in August 2022, Jade travelled to Singapore to commence her program. She completed two months of Mandarin studies before commencing six months of study at Raffles College. During her time, Jade gained strong insights into street style and the international fashion scenes in the Asia-Pacific.
Jade is passionate about the future of fashion in Australia and how the international fashion scene can help inform Australia to become a pioneer of the fashion industry. She hopes to continue to learn from the Asia-Pacific and the influence of street style, along with learning from and inspiring the NCP community and future creative NCP scholars.
Mohammad Raza Sohailee
University: Western Sydney University

Mohammad is a graduate of Western Sydney University, holding a unique triple degree in International Studies (International Relations and Asian Studies), Social Science (Peace and Development), and Creative Leadership and Critical Thinking. He also holds a Bachelor of Science (Forensic Science) from the same institution. His academic journey reflects his diverse interests in politics, development, social issues, and science.
During his final year, Mohammad was awarded two NCP Mobility grants. His first journey took him through Taiwan, where he gained valuable insights into the Sustainable Development Goals and renewable materials. In his second trip to Vietnam, he explored Corporate Social Responsibility and ethical business practices. These experiences deepened his understanding of cross-cultural communication and approaches.
Mohammad is not only academically dedicated but also passionately committed to various domestic and international causes. As a Kurdish-Iranian refugee, he holds a profound respect for human rights, justice, and equality. His dedication to volunteer work and advocacy has earned him recognition as Young Volunteer of The Year in Western Sydney. Mohammad aspires to make a meaningful contribution to the global community and work towards a fairer and more equitable world.
Kathryn Benson

Kathryn is a third-year undergraduate studying a Bachelor of Business with a Major in Marketing at Western Sydney University (WSU). She is an avid traveller with a passion for international trade, business, and social justice.
In 2023, Kathryn participated in an NCP mobility grant in Vietnam which focused on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Law and Cultural Diversity. The tour provided a fully immersive learning experience that encouraged Kathryn to embrace a global perspective, guiding her career from digital marketing into international trade and business.
Deeply inspired by the study tour and the history between Vietnam and Australia, Kathryn co-founded a student body at WSU, “Students for Charitable Cause”, which raises awareness on issues locally and globally. The society also fundraises for not-for-profit organisations such as Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation (an anti-human trafficking agency based in Hanoi, Vietnam).
Kathryn is passionate about promoting NCP opportunities to future students as she strongly believes in a student’s ability to challenge mindsets and inspire greater ambitions for university students across Australia.

Tamara Wakem

Tamara is a final year Bachelor of Laws student at Charles Darwin University. Her academic focus revolves around her passion for advocacy and criminal law, with a particular interest in the transnational aspects of the criminal justice system.
In 2023, Tamara participated in an NCP mobility project, travelling to Indonesia where she studied at the Universitas Indonesia. During her time in Indonesia, she delved into the study of transnational organised crime, an experience that not only expanded her knowledge but also further ignited her determination to explore how Australia can foster relations with the Indo-Pacific nations to combat transnational crimes, particularly the trafficking of drugs.
Tamara is also keenly involved in her community, volunteering at her local community legal centre. She also actively participates in outreach programs aimed at benefiting marginalised community members. Upon graduation, Tamara aims to pursue a career in criminal law where her strong dedication and passion for advocacy and commitment to tackling transnational criminal challenges will be put to meaningful use.

Rachel is a secondary school teacher on the Gold Coast with a passion for early childhood development and education in the Pacific. She is working towards developing her own non-government organisation, SIZTÄ Foundation, to support the Pacific’s education sector.
In 2022, Rachel received an NCP Scholarship, where she worked in the education sector for Child Benefit Fiji. During her internship, she delivered free education to children in marginalised communities; managed a research project on the impact of climate change on early childhood development; co-presented at the Charles Stuart University’s international Early Childhood Voices Conference on the topic ‘Mobile Kindy Fiji: Changing the face of early childhood development in the Pacific, one community at a time’; and headed a teacher professional development course. The highlight of Rachel’s program was being appointed as Fiji’s National Early Childhood Development Advisory Committee (NEAC) Administration Support Officer. In this role, she travelled across the country conducting a nation-wide consultation which served to draft Fiji’s first Early Childhood Development Policy. She also helped to plan the Pacific Regional Council for Early Childhood Development’s Early Childhood Development Conference which was hosted in Fiji and supported by UNICEF Pacific in February 2022.
Rachel is passionate about empowering teachers, building education capacity in marginalised communities, and strengthening Australia’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
Alissa Woods

Alissa completed an NCP Scholarship in Seoul, South Korea, and Bangkok, Thailand, working in corporate law and in peace and security at the United Nations. She also undertook an NCP mobility project in Japan, working with universities on climate action. Through her NCP opportunities, Alissa has developed a passion for strengthening Australia’s diplomatic and grassroots engagement with the Indo-Pacific.
Passionate about peace, security, and institutional integrity in the Indo-Pacific, Alissa is focusing on applying her experience to encourage youth engagement in foreign policy and international relations. She is looking forward to a future career in international law and diplomacy, where she hopes to focus on developing and advocating for peace-building mechanisms in conflict situations.
Jake Gries

Jake completed his Bachelor of Property and Bachelor of Business with Central Queensland University. It is during these studies that Jake received an NCP mobility grant to travel to Fiji and work with remote villages to build local capacity and establish sustainable tourism products.
Based in Cairns, Jake is passionate about his region and plays an active role in his community, with keen interests in economics and the arts. In 2023 he was selected to participate in the Cairns Chamber of Commerce Emerging Leaders Program which provided him with a platform to further share and develop his goals.
In his role as a project manager for an international design, engineering and consultancy firm, Jake’s aspiration is to channel his energy and competencies to tackle the difficult environmental challenges facing us over the coming years.

Jemma Trelour

Jemma’s experience through the NCP led her to Hong Kong, where she conducted a nature and health tour of the city. This immersive journey deepened her comprehension of the environmental and economic challenges prevalent in the region, and fostered an interdisciplinary perspective on the intricate societal dynamics of urban areas.
Jemma is determined to be an agent of transformative change within influential global institutions. Armed with an extensive reservoir of knowledge and a commitment to amplifying sustainability within vulnerable communities, she endeavors to assume a pivotal role in advocating for progressive change. Jemma is steadfast in her dedication to shaping a world where the voices of marginalised communities resonate universally, ushering in a more equitable and harmonious global paradigm.
Jessica O’Donoghue

Jessica is dedicated to reducing waste. Jess is a 3rd year student at Griffith University - Australia's first and leading Environmental Institution, studying a Bachelor of Environmental Science.
In 2018, one Gr12 assignment changed her world, as she learnt about Problematic Plastic Pollution and that it never goes 'away'. Long-term effecting the Environment and Remote communities. Jessica knew she first had to change, to no longer be a part of the problem, but be a part of the solution.
5-years on, she is passionate as ever, eradicating single-use plastics from her life and striving to live zero-waste. She has also visited remote Australian Aboriginal communities inundated by Plastic Waste.
In 2022, her worldview was changed as she went to Thailand for 5 weeks, through NCP Mobility Grant. Seeing the poverty and immense plastic in the cities and Indigenous communities affected by Climate Change, broke her heart. Jess now aspires to work in Community Development in Indigenous Communities, to listen and advocate for Indigenous nature-based solutions.
In the meantime, she works as a Campus Minister, running environmental workshops for high schoolers and young adults, advocating for these communities and sharing how young people can be zero-waste.
Overall, Jessica is passionate about being an NCP Ambassador, to empower more young people to change the world.
Tia Ngo Nguyen

Tia is a recent marine science graduate from James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland. While undertaking a Bachelor of Marine Science at one of the leading global marine biology universities, Tia had the opportunity to participate in an NCP mobility project, immersing herself in the exploration of tropical marine ecology and the profound environmental impacts affecting the coastal regions of Thailand.
This opportunity solidified Tia’s passion for, and commitment to, marine conservation and strengthening Australia’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific region. Tia aspires to work in a field to better understand marine and coastal ecosystems in a global context, with a particular emphasis on the nexus between marine affairs and people’s livelihoods.
Presently, Tia works as a Marine and Environmental Laboratory and Technical Support Advisor at James Cook University, supporting undergraduate, postgraduate and researchers and encouraging them to become environmental stewards. Tia hopes to maintain a fruitful collaboration with the NCP community, nurturing a profound appreciation for the learning and immersion opportunity in the Indo-Pacific among university students.

Maxwell is a passionate advocate for international exchanges and building lasting connections. He is currently completing his final year of Bachelor of Computer Science, majoring in Cyber Security. He has several years of experience in software engineering, and is highly invested in social and environmental technology, and the role it has in shaping the future.
Maxwell is a recipient of the NCP mobility grant. In 2023, he undertook an International Innovation and Entrepreneurship course at Dalian Neusoft University of Information, China. There, he learnt about regional and political dynamics, and how modern businesses are created and operate in Asia.
Having completed the 2023 Australian Defence Force Cyber Gap Program, Maxwell understands the significance international cooperation has in both the technical and political world.
Maxwell aims to empower fellow Australian students in their NCP endeavours, and actively contribute to the creation of a more connected, multicultural society.

Masham is a passionate computer science student at the University of Queensland (UQ), driven by a passion for machine learning, and specifically its healthcare applications. She believes that technology has the power to be a driving force for positive change in the world, as exemplified by her Presidency in Australia’s first Augmented/Extended Reality Society at UQ.
In 2023, Masham received a New Colombo Plan mobility grant to undertake a life-altering experience in China. During an intensive four-week program at Dalian Neusoft University of Information (DNUI), she immersed herself in the mission of elevating Dalian into a Smart City. This exposure acquainted her with diverse work styles, linguistic nuances, and cultural intricacies, enhancing her ability to engage effectively in global software development projects and furthering her understanding of global IT interconnectivity.
As the first member of her family to pursue studies in Australia, Masham is dedicated to empowering others and continuing her family’s enduring legacy, leaving a lasting impact through her endeavours.

Misa completed a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) at the Queensland University of Technology. She will begin working as a Dietitian in Brisbane from December 2023.
Misa undertook her New Colombo Plan program in Thailand and Japan, participating in internships across a wide variety of sectors including education (primary school setting), mental health (addiction recovery), and health care (traditional medicine). Through her time abroad, Misa had the opportunity to glean insights from both an Eastern and Western perspective across different sectors and learnt what adaptive, creative, and collaborative health care can look like.
Misa is passionate about the instrumental role that a nurturing relationship with food and body can have in cultivating mental well-being.

In January 2023, Daniel received an NCP mobility grant to travel to Mumbai (India) to participate in a QUT program – Development Economics. While in Mumbai, he and a group of peers, worked on research projects for Hindusthan Microfinance and the OSCAR Foundation. These NGOs work towards increasing equality in the focus areas of financial stability and education respectively.
Daniel is passionate about cross-cultural engagements, foreign policy, and Australia’s relationship with the Indo-Pacific region. Peter is an engineering consultant at Aurecon with over two years of experience across a diverse range of sectors such as Defence, Technology, and Built Environment. In September 2021, Peter completed an NCP mobility project which took place virtually in Malaysia. Throughout the program, he played a key role in a feasibility study for Common Ground, a co-working space provider in Southeast Asia, exploring their expansion into heritage buildings in Indonesia and Vietnam. This collaborative effort involved working closely with students from the University of Malaya.
Peter firmly believes in strengthening Australia’s ties within the Indo-Pacific region and looks forward to further developing these relationships in the future. Tim is an Environmental Economics graduate from the University of Tasmania. He also recently graduated from his honours in economics / marine science at UTAS. He is a passionate about sustainability, has a strong fascination for seaweed and its potential to combat climate change, is a qualified mountain bike coach, and loves travelling.
As part of his NCP mobility grant, he visited Indonesia on a sustainability field trip in 2019 where his group spent their time learning the Indonesian approach to sustainability and land management. In 2022 he also attended a conference in Townsville focused on combining marine science with Indigenous approaches to sustainability, which helped to inform his thesis on seaweed and climate change.
Tim hopes to motivate more people to engage in the NCP Program in the future, as he would love to see more people receiving the same value from the program that he did. He also can’t wait to tell anyone he can about the awesome potential of the humble seaweed!

Keegan Marsh

Keegan is studying a Bachelor of International Studies/Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University, majoring in International Relations and Economics. Passionate about diplomacy, security, and the international system, Keegan has enriched his academic journey through diverse global experiences. His career aspirations are to represent Australia on diplomatic platforms, particularly with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the United Nations.
A significant part of his academic journey was his short-term exchange program at Mahidol University in Bangkok, funded by an NCP mobility grant, where he studied Thai culture. Keegan also gained international academic experience at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy.
By the time of his graduation, Keegan will have amassed a portfolio of international academic and professional experiences, including a study tour at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva with the United Nations Association of Australia (Victoria Division) and his third short-term exchange program at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic.
Emilia Miller-Wilson

Emilia graduated from a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science, completing a semester exchange at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and is currently completing a sport psychology internship at Singapore’s National Youth Sport Institute (NYSI). Emilia is working on high performance sport psychology research and education for Singapore’s young elite athletes with strong mental health and wellbeing regimes in preparation for international tournaments like the Olympics. This is a great foundation for Emilia’s aspiration to support the Australian Team at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics in this field.
In Singapore, Emilia has built strong connections with sporting leaders, educators and academics, whilst actively engaging in Singapore’s sporting life. She has been training with AFL Asia’s Singapore Wombats and represented Singapore in the recent AFL Asia Championships with her team making the Grand Final. Emilia is passionate about all things sport, especially when it comes to mental health and wellbeing in athletes – she truly believes that mindset is a core factor in helping athletes perform at their elite best and she is eager to promote the importance of psychological safety in grassroots to elite sporting environments. Emilia plans to bring these learnings back to Australia and will continue to build on her networks in the Indo-Pacific to raise awareness in this field. Emilia will start a Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science at Deakin University when she returns to Australia.

Nathan is a passionate advocate for Indo-Pacific collaboration, currently completing his final year of a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) / Commerce (International Management) and a Diploma in Languages (Chinese) at La Trobe University. Nathan is driven to support and progress opportunities for collaboration between Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. In 2019, he travelled to Samoa through an NCP mobility grant, where he undertook a volunteer internship as an environmental consultant. This experience developed his interest in supporting businesses to make positive environmental, social, and corporate governance change.
More recently, as an NCP scholar in Hong Kong, Nathan is pursuing research on Hong Kong security and trade laws with a particular focus on the impact on foreign workers and businesses. Applying the experiences from his time studying and working across the Indo-Pacific and his pathway in commercial law and trade, Nathan hopes to help students and the NCP alumni community understand the extensive opportunities available for motivated young people. He wants to challenge mindsets and empower others to pursue academic and career ambitions in the Indo-Pacific, advocating for deeper engagement in the region.

Ebony also learned about how Malaysia has developed over time and the traditions of the Indigenous Kiulu community.

Ariel Hao

Ariel is in her final semester, pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Economics and Management. In 2023, she was awarded the NCP mobility grant for a semester exchange at Peking University in Beijing, where she studied in the School of Economics, gaining valuable insights into non-Western perspectives on economic issues. Ariel also had the honour of representing Peking University as an international student ambassador at the China-Pacific People-to-People Friendship Forum, where the focus was on poverty alleviation and international collaboration to improve global living standards.
As a former social policy intern at the Department of Treasury and Finance, Ariel is eager to work as an economist beyond the domestic sphere, with a particular focus on developmental and international labour policies. Her goal is to work on policies that explore intersectionality factors, such as race, class, and gender, with the aim of better serving marginalised communities.
During her time at the University of Melbourne, Ariel served as the Careers Director at the Australia China Youth Association, organising events like the ‘International Interns Panel’ to enhance job opportunities for international students. She also serves as a sponsorship officer at Enactus, a student association promoting social entrepreneurship.
In her free time, Ariel is also part of Peking University’s ‘FengLei Street Dance Crew.’ Whether perfecting her dance skills or exploring new places, Ariel’s commitment to continuous learning drives her forward.
Maya McDonnell

Maya is a Bachelor of Design student majoring in Architecture at the University of Melbourne with a passion for sustainable architecture and design.
Maya studied Geography and Urban Planning at the University of New Caledonia, paying attention to the fragility of the Pacific’s land and marine environments. Focusing on urbanisation and the built environment, Maya’s intent was to extend her knowledge of the Pacific with the future focus of seeking and sourcing improved processes and materials to implement across the region. Studying and conversing completely in French enhanced her connection with the local community.
Interning with architecture firm AAPi Design in Fiji, Maya gained insight into how Fijian vernacular architecture is intrinsic in modern commercial design. This allowed her to incorporate her knowledge of the sensitivity of the natural environment into responsible design practices.
Inspired by the beauty of the natural environment and local designers in New Caledonia and Fiji, Maya also completed a small folio of artworks. As a community minded person, Maya arranged a community beach cleanup named ‘KleanKuendu’, now proudly inherited by future students in Nouméa. Maya is completing her studies followed by a Masters of Architecture with the intent to become a sustainability and community focused designer.
Deandra D’Penha

Deandra is currently studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Federation University and a certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance.
In January 2023, Deandra travelled to Sri Lanka to the University of Peradeniya with an NCP mobility grant. With just two weeks of studying at Sri Lanka, she learned immensely about Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and culture including Ayurveda. Deandra’s participation in this program instilled an appreciation for global perspectives, inspiring her to advocate for fellow students to take this opportunity.
Her aspiration now includes pursing further studies in Medicine, fuelled by the newfound knowledge and experiences gained during her trip.
Aadya Mishra

Aadya is currently completing a Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) at Monash University. This one-of-a-kind degree is focused on equipping students with literacy in science as well as an understanding of how to create impact through scientific practice. In her studies, Aadya is completing a major in Mathematics. She is interested in exploring how mathematics and modelling can inform our understanding of the complex social dynamics that sit behind the biggest problems of our generation, and indeed their potential solutions.
In 2023, Aadya undertook an exchange semester at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, followed by three months of language training and an internship in India. As an Australian with Indian heritage, her NCP program allowed her to enrich her connection to, and investment in, family, culture, and language.
Jesse Dass

Jesse is a passionate advocate for social and environmental impact with a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Global Studies, and Diploma of Languages (Indonesian studies) from Monash University.
Through an NCP mobility project, Jesse studied the ACICIS Indonesian Language Short Course at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana. This program enhanced his Indonesian proficiency and cultural competency through language immersion, and complimented his previous in-country experience as a delegate for the Australia Indonesia Youth Exchange Program 2019.
He also studied abroad at Monash Malaysia, volunteered for the Monash Student Association, and undertook a research project on pre-colonial trade between First Nations peoples in Australia and Indonesians. Moreover, Jesse received the 2022 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to study Mandarin at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for 6-months.
Jesse’s passion for cross-cultural understanding is evident in his leadership roles with the Australia Indonesia Youth Association (Victorian branch), Australia Latam Emerging Leaders Dialogue, and Australia China Emerging Leaders Summit 15.

Oliver Knight

Oliver is a postgraduate research student at RMIT University, investigating FinTech and financial inclusion in Indonesia. He is passionate about using technology to make financial services more accessible and inclusive for all.
In 2022, Oliver received an NCP mobility grant to complete an internship in Jakarta, Indonesia. During the internship, he worked alongside a unicorn startup company and fellow students in a Global Innovation Challenge. The in-country experience allowed Oliver to gain an invaluable insight into the tapestry of business culture in Southeast Asia and practice global entrepreneurship.
Oliver’s current research project investigates the role of digital wallets in promoting financial inclusion in Indonesia. He is particularly interested in the ways in which digital wallets can help overcome traditional barriers to financial access.
Scott Fordyce

While undertaking a Bachelor of Community Development at Victoria University, Scott was awarded the 2020 NCP Scholarship for Fiji. During the scholarship, he interned at Live & Learn International for their Climate Resilient Islands program based in the Fiji island of Vanua Levu. The climate mitigation program helps develop and implement nature-based solutions to climate change in communities, by using Indigenous and scientific knowledge to restore and protect critical ecosystems while building economic and social resilience.
Through his NCP program, Scott was also able to study iTaukei (Indigenous Fijian) language and culture at the Retired Teachers Association in Suva. Scott now works with Melbourne City Mission to help connect young families with community as the Family Reunification Community Connector for the North East.

Arlene Janse Van Rensburg

In February 2023, Arlene completed a study tour at Mahidol University in Thailand, where she conducted an Actuarial project examining the housing market, interest rates, and Actuarial practices in Australia and Thailand. This experience expanded her academic horizons and provided a unique cultural perspective.
Beyond academics, Arlene is dedicated to various volunteering opportunities, such as mentoring high school students from underprivileged backgrounds and delivering STEM outreach programs. She hopes to pursue a career that allows her to make a meaningful impact.

Patrick is a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) student at Curtin University, Western Australia. He is passionate about using his skills to make a positive impact on the world, with a focus on sustainable development, infrastructure, and education.
In December 2022, Patrick travelled to a youth leadership summit at the United Nations conference centre in Thailand. There, he engaged with extraordinary young leaders from around the world, hearing from world-leading experts in sustainable development, and the foremost intergovernmental organisations. In January 2023, Patrick travelled to Miri, Malaysia to make the most of these learnings through the NCP mobility project with an interdisciplinary team of students to develop a project that would help address the UN Sustainable Development Goals and a pressing issue for the people in Miri.
Upon returning to Australia, the project was awarded an Industry Innovation grant to continue its development in partnership with international stakeholders and Curtin University academics. Patrick hopes to continue contributing to an intersectional area of strategic priority for Australian foreign relations across sustainable development, infrastructure, and education, and to encourage aspiring young leaders to help make the most of meaningful experiences such as the NCP.
Grace Hull

Grace is a passionate advocate for using sport to build a more inclusive and sustainable society. She has a Bachelor of Psychology (Sport Business) from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia and is currently working as an international development consultant at UNESCO Jakarta, where she specialises in youth and sport for development.
In 2022, Grace was selected as an NCP scholar for Thailand, where she spent eight months immersed in Thai language studies and pursued an exchange semester at Mahidol University. She then ventured to Indonesia, where she completed an internship with the UNESCO Jakarta.
Grace is a former elite swimmer having represented Australia internationally. In 2023, she gained recognition through her selection in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Young Leaders programme, which provided her with funding and leadership development opportunities. Through the support of the IOC, she has founded a social enterprise dedicated to the prevention of harm and abuse in sports.

Luka is a passionate advocate for Australia’s role in the global community. He is currently studying a double degree in Law and Commerce (Finance) at the University of Notre Dame Australia based in Fremantle.
In 2022, Luka was awarded an NCP Scholarship for Japan. While on program he completed a semester of study at Sophia University in Tokyo specialising in international business and economics. Luka also interned with Mitsubishi Corporation and travelled throughout Japan visiting group subsidiary companies to learn about the company’s sustainable business practices.
Since returning to Australia in 2023, Luka has remained connected with the NCP network through his participation in NCP Momentum and DFAT sponsored events such as the ‘XSPI: Development in the Indo-Pacific’ panel in Canberra this year.
Luka is particularly interested in developing strong relationships with partners in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world.
Henry Lan

After a study abroad experience at the National University of Singapore in 2019, he was awarded an NCP Scholarship to Taiwan, studying at the National Taiwan University and specialising in politics in the Indo-Pacific region and musicology. He is now undertaking language study in Japan and will be completing his program in 2024.
Henry is a passionate advocate for accessible and inclusive health systems, particularly for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Groups. He is also an avid promoter of cross-cultural dialogue and immersive experiences in the region and is eager to continue working to empower others to pursue immersive experiences.
