2025 New Colombo Plan Alumni Ambassador profiles

We are very excited to announce our NCP Alumni Ambassadors for 2025 who will represent the New Colombo Plan at their respective universities.

The New Colombo Plan Alumni Ambassadors Program supports alumni from each Australian university, including a designated First Nations Alumni Ambassador, to promote the New Colombo Plan and the value of Indo-Pacific study and work placements.

Jordan McGrath

Jordan McGrath

University: Griffith University

Program: Scholarship

Jordan is from Lunga Kija country and is studying wildlife biology and applied mathematics through a Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours) at Griffith University. He is interested in how mathematics is used to optimise conservation and ecology. Jordan believes that given the global nature of conservation challenges, international collaboration is vital. The Indo-Pacific region's proximity and vast biodiversity makes it a priority to collaborate with and jointly understand, conservation.

As an NCP scholar, Jordan travelled to Singapore in 2023 to study mathematics and engage with the Centre for Nature-Based Climate Solutions at the National University of Singapore. There he was involved with the Theoretical Ecology and Modelling lab, where he discovered the intersection of ecology and mathematical models. Jordan volunteered at Save Vietnam's Wildlife, in Vietnam to understand conservation at a ground level. Finally, he undertook Japanese studies in Japan, while also working at Picchio, a local bear tracking and research centre.


Riley Davis

Riley is a proud man of Yamatji country, completing a Bachelor of Creative Media, majoring in Graphic Design and Photography at Murdoch University, in Whadjuk country.

In 2024, he was selected to participate in a Murdoch University's NCP mobility project in Singapore, spending two weeks exploring Singaporean culture. Riley worked with a local sustainable organisation, the Ocean Purpose Project (OPP). Murdoch University's design thinking teachings were used in the project to develop solutions for OPP's design challenges.

The experience has encouraged Riley to undertake more design opportunities and follow his passion for strengthening the graphic design scene, with fellow creatives, in Western Australia.


Sharna Motlap

Sharna is a proud First Nations woman of the Mbabaram tribe of Queensland and of Hammond Island in the Torres Strait.  She is a nutritionist and a researcher for the Healthy Environments and Lives (HEAL) National Research Network. While studying a Bachelor of Nutrition at Torrens University Australia, Sharna gained numerous awards and was one of the first at her university to be awarded the NCP Scholarship, to complete an eight-month scholarship program in Bangkok, Thailand.

Sharna is completing a double degree studying a Master of Public Health, and Master of Health Research at Menzies School of Health Research, where she was awarded the prestigious Menzies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship, in 2023.

Her research interests are nutrition, climate change, public health, and Indigenous health, specifically the prevention of non-communicable diseases and improving socio-economic health factors. She has worked across rural and remote Northern Territory and has interned at a variety of research centres and health organisations across Australia.

Andrianna Cullen

Andrianna is a recent Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of International Security Studies graduate from the Australian National University. During her 2023 Scholarship program, Andrianna spent time in India connecting with space law experts to deepen her understanding of Australia-India's robust space relationship and international environmental and space law frameworks.

After completing her education component, Andrianna then travelled to Singapore where she studied Mandarin while completing an internship at Investment NSW. In Singapore, Andrianna focused on building strong people-to-people connections in ASEAN's trade and investment ecosystem. The project allowed her to gain valuable industry knowledge on the crucial role that commercial exchange plays in emerging sectors, including the outer space and environmental technology industry.

Andrianna plans to use her new-found knowledge to connect with international space and environmental law experts and enthusiasts in Australia and expand her network globally.


Lily O'Donell

Lily is in her final year of a double degree, studying a Bachelor of Science with a Psychology major, and a Bachelor of Arts (Global Studies), combining her interests in cultural studies and organisational psychology. Lily was awarded a 2023 NCP Scholarship which took her to Universiti Malaya, where she specialised in Southeast Asian social movements and Bahasa language. Lily completed a six-month internship with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission at the Australian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. This role allowed her to gain insights into foreign trade, investment and relationship building in a cross-cultural context.

Based in Adelaide, Lily works in health prevention, delivering events and campaigns targeting the wellbeing of international and domestic students. She is passionate about understanding cross-cultural influences and the richness and insight they bring to communities. Lily is excited to further deepen her relationship with the NCP community and looks forwards to encouraging others to explore the opportunities available through the scholarship.

Ashlyn White

Ashlyn is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Forensic Science, majoring in chemistry at University of Technology Sydney. In 2024, she will complete her final year of the course and plans to undertake an Honours year. Ashlyn has a deep interest in global improvement of forensic science services and processes, particularly in the use of chemistry in the field of criminal law.

In 2023, Ashlyn was awarded the NCP mobility grant to travel to Indonesia. While in Indonesia, Ashlyn was tasked to understand the nature of forensic science in the country and identify possible barriers towards the achievement of fair justice across the country.

This opportunity inspired Ashlyn to continue research in forensic chemistry, as she aspires to improve forensic science on a global scale.


Olivia Westaway

Olivia completed an NCP mobility project in Timor-Leste in 2023 while studying for a Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management. This program explored the agricultural practices and cultural expectations tin Timor-Leste, with an emphasis on how land title, inheritance, and environmental degradation, affect agricultural production outcomes.

This experience segued into a second study tour with Charles Sturt University, this time in Cambodia. The Cambodia Sustainability Fieldwork centred around environmental and social sciences and focused on the roles of communities, government and NGOs in preserving the environment, amidst the conflicting requirements for human development.

Olivia's experience living in rural NSW and being an online student was characterised by disconnection from peers and opportunities. However, due to the NCP program, she rediscovered her passion for agricultural studies and developed an appreciation for sustainable agriculture. Olivia's experience makes her a strong advocate for online students to increase their human-to-human connections with each other while growing awareness of NCP programs.

Benjamin Brien has experience in the mental health sector and a deep commitment to shaping policies that address issues of mental health and wellbeing in Australian regional and rural communities.

Benjamin is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work, with additional studies in Mental Health and Community Services. He has over five years of professional experience across mental health, suicide prevention, and high-level advisory roles with the NSW Mental Health Commission and the National Suicide Prevention Office.

During his NCP program, Benjamin undertook studies, internships, and language training in the Republic of Korea and Thailand, gaining valuable insights into regional perspectives on human rights. These experiences have fuelled his passion for improving regional relations with the Indo-Pacific and driving impactful, community-focused change in Australia.

As a 2025 NCP Alumni Representative for Charles Sturt University, Benjamin aims to improve access to NCP Scholarships and mobility grants for underrepresented groups such as people living in rural and remote areas, with cultural and linguistic diversity, and First Nations students.

Imandi Mudugamuwa is studying a Bachelor of Laws and Economics (Macroeconomics) at the University of New South Wales. Imandi moved to Australia from Sri Lanka and has since been motivated to engage with global challenges and give back to the community.

She has been actively involved in various leadership roles at UNSW, serving as Vice President (Social Justice) in the UNSW Law Society, Women's Officer for the UNSW Student Representative council (SRC) and volunteering with Redfern Legal Centre, UN Youth Australia and UNSW ASEAN Society.

Imandi's experience working for UNSW Unleash Innovation (UNOVA) Knowledge Hub and organising the UNSW ASEAN Conference sparked a deep interest in Southeast Asia. She values the opportunities that the NCP provided to further this interest through a work-integrated learning course in Bangkok. As a 2025 NCP Representative, she is committed to increasing awareness of the NCP this coming year.


Harine Somasundaram

Harine is a final year Bachelor of Arts with the degree of Bachelor of Laws student majoring in environmental management and international relations, at Macquarie University. After completing her NCP program in Nepal, India, and Republic of Korea, Harine gained a newfound appreciation and respect for the diverse cultures of the Indo-Pacific and the opportunities to strengthen Australia's ties in the region. She developed an interest in regional climate policy and environmental law from the internships and research projects under her NCP program which landed her a role as a paralegal at an Australian environmental law firm.

Harine's transformative NCP journey motivates her to contribute to the growth and success of this initiative and she looks forward to encouraging more undergraduates of diverse backgrounds to apply for the program.


Ziyan Tejani

Ziyan is pursuing a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Social Science at Macquarie University, majoring in Politics. He is a policy advocate and community volunteer committed to strengthening Australia's engagement with Asia and the Pacific. For his efforts, he was recognised in both the 2024 Asian-Australian Leadership Awards and Melbourne Asia Game Changer Awards.

As a 2024 NCP Alumni Representative, Ziyan led diverse initiatives promoting NCP study and work opportunities.  A 2022 NCP Scholar, Ziyan studied at the National University of Singapore, completed an intensive Mandarin course, and undertook internships and mentorships focused on Southeast and West Asian diplomacy.

With experience in think tanks and non-profits including as Vice-President of the Young Diplomats Society, Ziyan is passionate about driving positive change and a future in diplomacy. He is committed to creating opportunities that empower young people to engage with and shape Australia's role in the Indo-Pacific.


Manvir Singh

Manvir Singh is in her final year of studying a Bachelor of Laws at Southern Cross University. Manvir is passionate about social justice and legal reform, as was the focus of her participation in the NCP.

As a 2024 NCP scholar, Manvir worked closely with Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia Community Legal Education and The Legal House, Thailand, developing legal educational resources and contributing to pro-bono initiatives for marginalised communities. She attended the Chiang Mai Provincial Court, engaged with senior officials at the Australian Embassy in Thailand, and judged the Asia Clinical Legal Education Mock Sentencing Hearing. 

The NCP experience significantly enriched Manvir's personal, academic and professional journey, reflected in her current employment as a paralegal. Exposure to Southeast Asian legal systems during the NCP strengthened her commitment to advancing equitable legal outcomes for vulnerable communities.

Manvir is optimistic about Australia's future within the Asia-Pacific region and driven by her passion, is committed to improving access to justice for marginalised communities and fostering stronger relationships in the region.


Alexandra Lyons

Alexandra is completing a Bachelor of International and Global Studies (Honours) majoring in Indonesian Studies at The University of Sydney. Alexandra is passionate about cultural and educational diplomacy and seeks to encourage young people to become linguistically and culturally competent and use modern diplomatic strategies through social media.

While studying anthropology at Universitas Indonesia and completing an internship at Bali Children Foundation in Indonesia as part of the NCP, Alexandra developed an interest in empowering rural communities using education to improve their opportunities and build capacity. She hopes that the connections she has built across the Indonesia-Australia sphere will enable her to pursue a career in diplomacy so that she can vouch for the importance of providing multicultural education for underprivileged communities to strengthen the bilateral relationships and promote the prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.


Sneha Karri

Sneha is an NCP alum (2022 Fellow to the Republic of Korea) with a Bachelor of Arts (International Relations) and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Korean Studies) from The University of Sydney. During her NCP program, she studied at Seoul National University for a year and was appointed as the University's first non-Korean reporter. She volunteered for ANZA Korea, AustCham Korea, and at the Australian Embassy.

Sneha interned at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission Seoul, supporting international education and energy initiatives, and at Samsung C&T Engineering and Construction. After studying translation and interpreting at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, she worked at Samsung C&T's Seoul headquarters. Sneha has translated three Korean books into English and is currently working on her fourth, while studying a year-long literary translation course at the Literature Translation Institute of Korea. She looks forward to an impactful career as a translator and diplomat.


Gennifer Samuel

Gennifer is in her final year of a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) degree in Biological Sciences, majoring in Microbiology at The University of Newcastle, Australia. Passionate about scientific research, she bridges communication gaps on global health, making complex knowledge more accessible and impactful.

In 2024, Gennifer received two NCP mobility grants to study at Chung-Ang University in the Republic of Korea. She undertook the International Winter Program, immersing herself in Korean culture and language, and later completed a semester exchange, where she took courses in microbiology and bioinformatics. This experience allowed her to participate in a laboratory internship, deepening her scientific understanding of Indo-Pacific research.

Gennifer is completing an amphibian conservation internship focused on reproductive biology and works with a transdisciplinary team to give industry partners evidence-based strategies for sustainability initiatives. Her roles have strengthened her cross-cultural communication skills, preparing her for meaningful service as a global ambassador for Australia.

Nada is undertaking a Bachelor of International Studies and Media at the University of New South Wales, with a focus on Politics and International Relations. She is passionate about fostering cross-cultural understanding and advocating for social inclusion, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region.

As a 2023 NCP mobility grant recipient, Nada completed a year-long exchange at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea. There, she explored her interest in political science and diplomacy while studying the complex dynamics of regional politics. Her time in Republic of Korea not only deepened her knowledge of international relations but also allowed her to engage in cultural exchange, strengthening her commitment to building strong ties between Australia and Asia.

Amelia Wilson-Williams

Amelia is pursuing a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Communications (Social and Political Sciences) at the University of Technology Sydney.

Amelia first engaged with the NCP in 2022, completing a virtual Law Professional Practicum with the Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country' Indonesian Studies, and completed a virtual UN SDG focused internship in Malta. After completing a second mobility project in 2024, Amelia travelled to Indonesia to undertake an environmental law internship facilitated by International Internships.

Amelia is a passionate volunteer and advocate for sexual and domestic family violence organisations and has recently begun volunteering as a Key Peer Educator with DanceWize NSW.

As a 2025 Alumni Representative, Amelia is keen to champion the value of Indo-Pacific study to the wider university community and improve accessibility for students from diverse backgrounds to engage with the program.

Hannah is a graduate of the University of Wollongong, holding a degree in International Studies. She is currently working within the university's Global Strategy Division.

In 2023, Hannah was awarded the NCP Scholarship for Malaysia, where she spent a semester at Universiti Malaya, focusing on South-East Asian Foreign Policy. During her scholarship, she completed internships with Austrade and the local NGO Tenaganita, gaining valuable insights into trade, policy, and human rights advocacy. These diverse experiences enriched her understanding of the Indo-Pacific and contributed significantly to her professional growth.

As a 2025 NCP Alumni Representative, Hannah is passionate about empowering regional students to pursue opportunities in the Indo-Pacific. She actively engages with the undergraduate student community, encouraging more students to take part in life-changing NCP programs and cultivating a deeper dialogue on the value of cultural exposure.

Mishal is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws at Western Sydney University, where she serves as President of the Western Sydney Law Student Association. Passionate about social justice, she has contributed to her campus and community through volunteering at justice clinics and participating in university-led social justice campaigns.

Through the NCP, Mishal took part in the Global, Law, Governance, and Culture study tour in Japan. This experience provided her with valuable insights into Japan's legal system, governance, and cultural heritage.  Mishal engaged with experts across Japan on ethical global lawyering. Her in-country experiences l further enriched her perspective, preparing her for the complexities of a globalised legal landscape.


Taylah Hollier

Taylah Hollier is completing her final year of a double degree in International Studies (International Relations and Asia Studies) and Social Science (Peace and Development Studies) at Western Sydney University. Driven by a strong desire to work abroad, she has set her sights on destinations such as China and Taiwan.

In 2023, Taylah was awarded her first NCP mobility grant, allowing her to study ethics and public policy in Hong Kong. In 2024, she was awarded a second NCP grant, this time to Vietnam, where she furthered her understanding of Southeast Asia's history.

Looking ahead to 2025, Taylah plans to enrich her academic journey by pursuing a Bachelor of Creative Leadership through The Academy at Western Sydney University, while continuing her Mandarin language studies.

Her inspiration stems from a passion for global citizenship and good governance. Taylah believes that NCP Scholarships provide an invaluable opportunity for both personal and academic development, enabling individuals to thrive on the world stage.

Danielle is a Bachelor of Environmental Science student at Charles Darwin University. In 2023, she was awarded the NCP mobility grant to travel to India, where she gained insights into sustainable agricultural practices and learned about Indian Punjabi culture. She earned a deep understanding of how Indian culture, with its rich traditions, plays a vital role in addressing global challenges. By observing how local communities integrate cultural knowledge with modern techniques, Danielle recognised the importance of cultural heritage in finding innovative solutions to environmental issues. This perspective has strengthened her appreciation for the role of cultural diversity in global problem-solving.

Danielle also actively promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and cultural awareness in remote Northern Territory communities, providing students with valuable exposure to STEM subjects. Danielle is committed to bridging cultural and educational gaps and fostering cross-cultural understanding, blending modern STEM learning with First Nations' knowledge to inspire students and create opportunities for collaboration.

Alana is studying a Bachelor of Education at Australian Catholic University.

In 2024, Alana received an NCP mobility grant to the Solomon Islands for a teaching immersion program at Bishop Epalle Catholic School in Honiara. During her time in the Solomon Islands, Alana was involved in planning, teaching and assessment across different subject areas, working alongside local teachers to develop inter-cultural communication and teaching skills. Alana's immersion deepened her comprehension of academic and economic challenges prevalent in the country. Alana adapted her pedagogical approaches to suit the local context (English as an additional language or dialect), improving student learning outcomes.

From this invaluable experience, Alana developed a passion for working and teaching in First Nations communities, applying her practical experience from the Solomon Islands to use education as a tool for empowerment for Australian students.


Zac McDougall

Zac will complete his double degree with a Bachelor of International Relations and a Bachelor of Laws at Bond University, in 2024. He completed his NCP Scholarship in Japan from 2023 into early 2024.

Zac undertook an exchange semester at Osaka University, where he studied Japanese and International Law, Japan's domestic politics, and international relations from an East Asian perspective. He also completed language training in Kyoto and completed internships with the Mitsubishi Group and the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.

Recognising the need to foster Indo-Pacific understanding in Australia, Zac is passionate about the NCP and the great opportunity the program presents to government, business, and Australian society. He believes strongly in the NCP to foster people-to-people and institutional links through language study and cross-cultural literacy.


Carlie Sommers

Carlie graduated with distinction from Central Queensland University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Biology. As a 2022 NCP scholar, she undertook genetics and taxonomy studies at Hokkaido University while completing six months of intensive Japanese language training in Tokyo and Sapporo. Carlie's most impactful experience occurred during her internship at the Kikai Institute for Coral Reef Sciences.

Carlie served as a mentor assistant for the Coral Reef Science Camp, inspiring local students through engaging, hands-on marine science activities. Her NCP journey ignited a passion for cross-cultural exchange and scientific collaboration, with the most rewarding aspect being the life-long connections she built. Carlie is eager to guide future scholars through transformative experiences abroad, believing the program nurtures curiosity and shapes participants into globally minded leaders.

Pushti is a third-year Bachelor of Law (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts student at Griffith University, with a passion for human rights and advocating for children's rights and safety.

In 2024, Pushti was awarded an NCP mobility grant to participate in a study tour in Fiji, where she explored the role of local businesses and Fiji's progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. This experience allowed her to gain valuable insights into the environmental challenges threatening Fiji's natural resources. She learnt about the importance of culture and human connections in achieving change.

Pushti had the opportunity to engage in conversations with Fijian children and university students, who shared their personal stories of struggles and resilience, further fuelling her passion for studying child rights and exploring effective advocacy strategies.


Seth Shoubridge

Seth is studying a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology and Anthropology at James Cook University. His academic journey is highlighted with international experiences thanks to the NCP, including field experiences in Thailand (2022 and 2024) and Laos (2023).

Growing up in rural north Queensland, Seth developed a passion for understanding diverse cultures. Seth's work in archaeology and anthropology is grounded in uncovering the past and fostering cultural exchanges. He aspires to contribute to Australia's future by exploring diplomatic routes in the Indo-Pacific.

His academic studies and time abroad have given him a comprehensive understanding of the Indo-Pacific.  Seth is committed to cultural preservation and the pursuit of knowledge, making him a strong candidate to contribute towards strengthening Australia's ties with the region.

Finlay completed his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours) at the Queensland University of Technology.

He has a strong interest in supporting decarbonisation efforts across Southeast Asia through sustainable technology development. His engineering thesis developed a process model and economic analysis of an advanced biofuels refinery to produce bio-commodities from domestic biomass feedstock.

During his 2023 NCP Scholarship, Finlay completed a semester of exchange at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His studies gave him a better understanding of the financial trading sector within Singapore, to understand the barriers facing Australia's potential as a lower-carbon commodities exporter. He completed an internship with Ampol Singapore Trading, to gain practical insight into Asia's energy market before relocating to Japan.

He completed the NCP Mitsubishi Group Internship Program hosted by Mitsubishi Corporation in Tokyo, where he gained exposure to decarbonisation technology manufacturing, corporate-social responsibility mechanisms, and developing Australia-Japan relations in the context of climate change and food security. He then completed four months of full-time Japanese language studies in Kyoto, while finishing his final semester of studies, remotely.

Alongside her studies, Grace volunteered with The Recovery Assistance Center of Miyagi and developed meaningful connections with fellow students and professionals. Through her internship, she gained practical experience in policy analysis, compliance, and legislative advocacy.

Grace is passionate about bridging law and policy and plans to pursue a career in public policy or commercial litigation. She continues her involvement in various policy, volunteer, and community projects, and is excited to apply her newfound skills and experiences to her future legal career.

Lily is a recent graduate of archaeology from Flinders University. She completed her Bachelor of Archaeology in 2024 and has since started her Masters in Anthropology. She is passionate about bridging the gap between past and present cultures as well as aiding in cultural reconnection in rural landscapes, in particular Central Asia.

During her studies, she undertook a short-term NCP mobility project in Mongolia, and working alongside Mongolian, American and Australian archaeologists had the opportunity to excavate and analyse looted tomb sites in rural Mongolia. This experience enhanced her understanding of Central Asian culture and enriched her desire to study the history of this region in greater depth, as she continues to promote the importance of relationships between current and past cultures.

Her goal is to encourage ancestral reconnection and to enhance historical education in rural areas of Central Asia, and to contribute to often fragmented knowledge of the ancient cultures of these regions. Her experience in the NCP program further solidified her desire to work beyond the domestic sphere, and to encourage relationships between Australia and this region.

Rebecca undertook her NCP Scholarship in Malaysia and Singapore from 2023 to 2024. During her program, Rebecca engaged in six months of Malay language training and completed a semester exchange at the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur. In 2024, she completed a six-month internship at the ASEAN Microbiome Nutrition Centre under Singapore's National Neuroscience Institute, followed a placement at Malaysia's National Sports Institute (Institut Sukan Negara).

Maddie is a graduate with a Bachelor of International Studies (Global Scholar) and a Diploma in Indonesian from Deakin University. Maddie recently returned to Australia from a 19-month NCP Scholarship.

She completed a semester exchange at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, studying Bahasa Indonesia and Human Rights while conducting research with Circle Indonesia on a development project. Maddie continued language training in Lombok while interning with a grassroots NGO in sustainability and women's empowerment. She then studied Thai in Bangkok and completed an internship with UNESCAP in social development, focused on social protection in Asia and the Pacific. Maddie concluded her program in Hanoi, Vietnam where she interned with the Australian Embassy's education partnership, Aus4Skills.

Maddie is passionate about sustainable international development and providing equal education opportunities. As an NCP Alumni Representative, Maddie will continue to encourage stronger links between Australia and the Indo-Pacific through promoting language exchange and student mobility.

Tylah Meunier was given the opportunity to travel to Sri-Lanka through an NCP mobility project (2024). He is currently completing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) after completing a Bachelor of Environmental and Conservation Science at Federation University Australia.

He was given the opportunity to work collaboratively with the University of Peradeniya exploring Sri Lankan ecosystems and conservation efforts.  The NCP offered Tylah the ability to network, collaborate and learn from exceptional students and staff at the University of Peradeniya. The project furthered Tylah's passion for ecology, inspiring him to embark on honours research. With the program instilling Australia's connection to the Indo-Pacific region, Tylah intends to continue in the field of research and has ambitions to work collaboratively with Sri Lankan academics given the experiences he gained from the NCP.

Hammad Shahin is a final year Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Relations student at La Trobe University, with a Diploma of Languages (Indonesian). He recently completed a 19-month NCP Scholarship experience in Indonesia, participating in two semester exchanges, intensive language training, and an internship. Primarily based in Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Bali, Hammad developed professional fluency in Indonesian, with a strong grasp of both formal and informal Indonesian. Hammad's NCP program also enabled him to volunteer with organisations like the Conference of Australian and Indonesian Youth (CAUSINDY), and the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA).

Hammad is passionate about increasing the number of Australians studying Indonesian and encouraging more NCP scholars to choose Indonesia as their primary host destination. With a focus on promoting Indonesian language education in Australia, Hammad is committed to strengthening Australia-Indonesia relations.

As an NCP Fellow in 2022, Anisha undertook her study program in Singapore, studying modules in political science, migration and Chinese economics. She also completed Hindi language training and an internship at Infosys in Bangalore, India where she contributed to the community by completing a lake restoration project to reduce sewage contamination and create better environmental ecosystems for locals.

During his NCP Scholarship in Japan, Fraser embraced immersion, utilising his Japanese language proficiency to gain deep insights into Japanese society and culture. He undertook engineering studies at the University of Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture and Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo, followed by intensive language training at Coto Language Academy.

Through internships in software engineering, business strategy, and renewable energy, Fraser gained valuable experience in Japan's technical and corporate domains, which he aims to leverage in his career locally, in Japan, and across the wider Indo-Pacific region.

Hamish is completing his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) at Curtin University. After travelling to Bangladesh on an NCP mobility project in 2024, he became passionate about the impact of different teaching styles in the pursuit of educating engineers.

Hamish will design a fully accessible course on additive manufacturing for high school students as his thesis project beginning in 2025. On the study tour to Bangladesh, Hamish saw the difference in social, economic, religious and environmental conditions when devising and producing a project engineered to help the community. With this valuable experience, he now strives to lead in creating environments where people of diverse cultures feel understood and comfortable. He believes more engineers need to understand the differing perspectives of their colleagues and communities to make the world a more understanding and better place.


Aaron Bywater

Aaron is a freshwater and marine biologist from Edith Cowan University. He is an experienced research assistant, aquarium specialist, and aquatic fieldwork technician.

As an NCP scholar, Aaron spent over a year in Fiji completing his final semester of undergraduate study at the University of the South Pacific. He also worked with an international NGO called Corals for Conservation.  Aaron worked with several local community partners and stakeholders to implement the Reefs of Hope strategy across the Pacific region. This strategic framework paired community-led coral gardening and mangrove farming with alternative livelihood workshops that could be adopted in traditional village communities. Following his time in Fiji, Aaron studied Bahasa Indonesia in Indonesia for three months and completed an internship with Universitas Bangka Belitung.

Aaron is preparing to commence a Master of Science by Research in 2025 and will focus on researching accelerated ecosystem succession in decommissioned mine pit lakes and defining metrics for successful restoration.

On program in Republic of Korea, she completed an exchange semester at Sogang University, studying ancient Korean history, East Asian economic development and learning about the Republic of Korea's role in global affairs. She also studied an intensive Korean language course and built strong, meaningful connections within the local community.

During his NCP mobility project in India, Liam investigated the impact of the construction of hydropower dams on Indigenous communities that make up Sikkim, the mountainous state in northeast India that intersects with the Himalaya.

Liam has a keen interest in exploring the balance between development, energy generation, and the potential risks of dam construction. He is also eager to examine the broader implications of rapid development from regulatory and safety perspectives.
