Australia is working with the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Government to build a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient region. Our Comprehensive Strategic and Economic Partnership guides our cooperation on the economy, governance, law and justice, health, education, gender equality and climate change.

Minister for International Development and the Pacific, the Hon Pat Conroy MP will travel to Papua New Guinea to deepen the relationship between our nations. This builds on the high tempo of ministerial engagements since elections in both our countries.

The review presented the third and final assessment of the Papua New Guinea–Australia Governance Partnership.

Australia is committed to working in partnership with the Government of Papua New Guinea to meet the needs and aspirations of its people to build resilience to climate change and disaster events.

The Australian Government is partnering with the Queensland Rugby League, to expand our support for high performance rugby league in Papua New Guinea worth $2.275 million, to be delivered through the PacificAus Sports program and will implement a high performance strategy.

The Building Community Engagement in PNG Program (BCEP, $87.5m from 2022‒2026) promotes constructive engagement between civil society and the PNG Government as part of Pillar 1 of the CSEP – Strong Democracies for a Stable Future. The goal of the BCEP is to strengthen citizen-government engagement for improved service delivery and provision of public goods. It has a particular emphasis on promoting gender equality and inclusive social norms.

This week, Senator Wong will travel to Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste, to renew and strengthen Australia’s ties with two of our nearest neighbours.

The independent review assesses the performance and quality of the Australian funded PNG-Australia Transport Sector Support Program as at 2022. The South Fly Resilience Plan is an Australian-funded development program in Western Province, Papua New Guinea, which commenced in early 2021. DFAT commissioned the Quality and Technical Assurance Group, implemented by Oxford Policy Management, to undertake an independent review of the Plan from April-May 2022.
