Asbestos Management in the Aid Program

Environmental and social safeguard policy on managing asbestos risk [Word 2.3 MB] | [PDF 800 KB] outlines the department's approach to managing asbestos-related hazards in the Australian aid program, including implementation of the department's ban on the use of asbestos and/or asbestos containing material (ACM).

The policy aims to minimise the adverse impacts of asbestos and/or ACM on the health of workers, communities and the environment, and to improve asbestos risk management practice. The policy applies to DFAT-administered Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded aid investments, regardless of value, partner arrangement or funding mechanism. It complements existing DFAT policy and guidance on environmental and social safeguards, work health and safety and aid risk management.

The Environmental and social safeguard guideline to managing asbestos risk [Word 2.5 MB] | [PDF 900 KB] provides practical advice on the management of asbestos and/or ACM in the aid management cycle to support policy implementation.
