Whole of government

Delivery of the Australian aid program is a whole-of-government effort which harnesses specific experience, skills and knowledge across a range of Australian Government agencies to help reduce global poverty and improve prosperity and stability in our region.

Other Government Departments delivering Australian Official Development Assistance include the following:

  • Attorney-General's Department delivers targeted programs and activities that support international and regional partners to develop their law and justice and policing sectors, and capacity building and technical assistance strengthen and implement legal and policy responses to human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery.
  • Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is enhancing biosecurity partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region. This includes strengthening the biosecurity capacity and capability of our regional and near-neighbour biosecurity counterparts, building on longstanding bilateral relationships, technical exchange and regional collaboration.
  • Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research actively contributes to Australia's overall development cooperation objectives by facilitating and funding international agricultural research partnerships that improve the productivity and profitability of agricultural systems in eastern and southern Africa, East Asia, South and West Asia and the Pacific.
  • Australian Federal Police contributes to Australia's international development efforts, particularly the strengthening of peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, through longstanding bilateral police partnerships and a suite of regional mechanisms, networks and development programs.
  • Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water contributes to the overall development objectives through support for Pacific island country engagement in multilateral environment agreements and on-ground blue carbon ecosystem projects in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
  • Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia's national science agency, works closely with Australian Government departments and agencies, as well as other government, business, research and local community partners to develop innovative, science-based responses to the region's priority challenges and boost the science, technology and innovation capabilities needed to build future resilience and sustainable growth.
  • Employment and Workplace Relations jointly manages the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme with DFAT. PALM supports the economic growth of Pacific island countries and Timor-Leste by providing workers from participating countries with jobs in Australia, enabling them to develop skills, earn income and support their families and communities back home.
  • Health and Aged Care activities include support to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, which funds development of vaccines for diseases of pandemic potential and supports access to such vaccines for low and lower-middle-income countries.
  • Treasury supports multilateral development banks that contribute to development outcomes, including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Finance Corporation.

The department also works closely with other government agencies on a range of initiatives to implement and enhance the effectiveness and transparency of the aid program.
