Venessa Curnow, Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Unit at the Cairns Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, visited Nauru in August as part of DFAT's NAIDOC Speaker Series, "Because of Her, We Can", with the aim of increasing knowledge, sharing and strengthening people-to-people links.

Venessa met with key representatives from the Republic of Nauru Hospital, Public Health Centre, Able Disable Centre, University of the South Pacific, the Rotary Club of Nauru, UNE students, Nauru Secondary School students and Australian alumni. Venessa was also a guest speaker at a screening of Indigenous Short Films hosted by the Australian High Commission.
