NAIDOC Speaker Series 'Because of Her, We Can'

In 2018 DFAT'S Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program supported an outstanding series of powerful speaking engagements linked with this year's NAIDOC theme, "Because of Her, We Can". DFAT posts hosted visits by leading Indigenous Australian women achieving excellence in their chosen fields, across 17 countries in the Indo-Pacific, Africa, North Asia and North America.

The exchanges supported new partnerships in the fields of business and entrepreneurship, media, health, sport, arts, technology and leadership while promoting the expertise of Australia's trailblazing Indigenous women.

  • Former professional soccer player and teacher, Belinda Dawney visited Tonga in June 2018. Belinda's official program engaged with the Tongan soccer and touch football communities, school students, and local artists.

  • Pretoria Post hosted the first stop of Lee-Ann's regional tour. The visit focussed on Indigenous engagement using art. Lee-Ann gave a keynote address at the Inaugural Arts and Health Summit, held in Bloemfontein.

  • Lee-Ann's final stop in Egypt reinforced the message of NAIDOC Week and contemporary Australia to hundreds of people, from Nubian musicians and entrepreneurs in the far South, to Cairo-based artists, archaeologists and students, to refugees from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Syria, Sudan and South Sudan.

Torres Strait delegations attend their first Melanesian Festival of the Arts

With the support of DFAT's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program, the Australian High Commission in Honiara arranged for a Torres Strait Islander delegation to attend the 6th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival (MACFest).
