Project description

This year, South Korea is celebrating 100 years of cinema. The first Korean film "Fight for Justice" screened for the first time in October 1919. From films depicting the Korean Independence movement post world war II to the golden age of Korean cinema from the 50's to 70s to the critically acclaimed cult hit "Oldboy"' (2013) and most recently Korean auteur Bong-Joon Ho taking out the Palme d'Or for "Parasite"; Korean films have connected people, to issues and are rapidly gaining international acclaim and audiences. The Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) will honour Korean Cinema with a special celebration of the films and filmmakers from Korea who have been acclaimed by APSA. APSA will bring together filmmakers from Australia and Korea to discuss the potential of unlocking the Australia-Korea co-production treaty. The panels will discuss the history of western / Korean collaborations and the opportunity to capitalise on the growing appetite for cinema from the Asia Pacific region.
