DFAT wishes to advise stakeholders of the commencement of work on a review and renegotiation of certain market access outcomes for Australian goods exports to Japan — as provided for under the JAEPA built-in agenda. This will cover market access outcomes for a limited number (258) of tariff lines specified in Japan’s JAEPA goods schedule, including lines relating to live cattle, beef, seafood, dairy, sugars, processed foods, cereals and milled products, animal feed, and wood products.
Australia’s approach to the mandated JAEPA market access review and renegotiation will take into account outcomes subsequent to JAEPA under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) as well as anticipated outcomes from ongoing negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
DFAT has commenced preparatory work for this market access review and renegotiation, including preliminary discussions with Japan. Our work program will include targeted consultations with key stakeholders, which we will identify based on the specified tariff lines. We also welcome written submissions from any interested stakeholders — which can be sent to japanEPA@dfat.gov.au. Submissions will be treated as public and may be published on this website, unless the author specifically requests that the submission, or part thereof, be handled in confidence.
