Australia is supporting Cambodia’s efforts to become a more prosperous, resilient and inclusive middle-income nation.
Australia and Cambodia are close neighbours, long-standing partners and friends. Since helping to bring peace to the country in the early 1990s, Australia has provided over $2 billion in development assistance. Our relationship is underpinned by strong people-to people links and cooperation on strategically important issues.
Strategic direction
Australia’s development partnership is enabling Cambodia to deliver sustainable and inclusive growth for all its citizens, improve governance, and increase access to and the quality of public services – particularly for women and people with disabilities.
Program highlights
- Promoted civic space in Cambodia by convening 28 policy dialogues including national/provincial policy forums on economic and social policy between research institutes, civil society organisations, the private sector and Cambodian government (2021-23).
- Provided 3.4 million Cambodians with free healthcare services through the Health Equity Fund (2023).
- Improved maternal and early childhood health and nutrition services in 81% of health centres in seven provinces (2023).
- Supported over 500,000 at-risk households to register for social protection to receive payments during economic or natural crises (2022-24).
- Supported the establishment of gender-based violence response networks in seven provinces across 39 districts (2018-23).
- Improved public service delivery in 866 Cambodian communes in 102 districts/municipalities, 700 health centres and approx 3,844 primary schools (2021-24).
- Partnered with Cambodia's private sector to expand piped, treated water to one million Cambodians (2018-24).
- Supported clearance of 3,649km2 of mine-contaminated land, making new land available for productive use for 48,834 Cambodians (2023).
- Strengthened the business enabling environment through assistance to the Government Private Sector Forum and support for implementation of its over 180 recommendations (2023-24).
