Australia has elevated its partnership with Tuvalu, through our historic Falepili Union. The Falepili Union is about our collective sovereignty, safeguarding our future and supporting the people of Tuvalu to stay and thrive in their homeland.
Australia and Tuvalu share a commitment to deepening our development partnership through the Falepili Union. Australia’s development cooperation program in Tuvalu addresses the Government of Tuvalu’s priorities, including climate adaptation, education, telecommunications, connectivity, economic governance, and the Tuvalu Trust Fund.
Strategic direction
Australia will continue listening and delivering on Tuvalu’s priorities to ensure the long-term prosperity of its people.
In 2024-25, Australia plans to continue to support Tuvaluan students to study at institutions in Australia and the region through Australia Awards Scholarships.
Program highlights
- Australia is providing additional support to extend the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, which creates safe, habitable land in Tuvalu for the next 100 years in the face of rising seas (SDG13).
- Australia is supporting Tuvalu to secure its first undersea telecommunications cable, which will allow greater connectivity and unlock new opportunities for industry and innovation (SDG9).
- Australia is supporting quality and inclusive education in Tuvalu's schools, with a focus on literacy and numeracy, inclusive and vocational education, as well as the Ministry of Education's people and systems (SDG4).
- Australia is the main funder of programs within Tuvalu's National Gender Equity Policy, including increasing women's access to finance and training, supporting the Gender Affairs Department to mainstream gender equity across national and local government and support the establishment of counselling services and raise awareness on gender-based violence (SDG5).
- Australia's budget support as well as contributions to the Tuvalu Trust Fund and its governance have been essential in progressing greater economic resilience for the Government of Tuvalu (SDG8).
