Australia is Fiji’s largest bilateral development assistance partner. Our development cooperation program supports resilient, sustainable and equitable development in Fiji—a key hub for the Pacific region.
The relationship between Fiji and Australia is underpinned by close and practical cooperation. Development Programs in Fiji contribute to the achievement of Fiji’s National Development Plan and Fiji’s implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Australia and Fiji share a strong and enduring bilateral relationship. The renewed and elevated Fiji-Australia Vuvale Partnership articulates our shared aspiration to enhance cooperation, consultation and friendship.
Australia’s development cooperation program in Fiji supports our ambition for a Pacific region that is peaceful, stable and prosperous.
We are committed to climate action and scaling up locally-led program delivery. We are supporting high-quality outcomes in priority sectors for Fiji including health, education and skills, as well as strengthening climate change action and advancing gender equality.
Program highlights 2023-24
- Our ODA for 2023-24 was supplemented by additional budget support of FJD 100 million (AUD68 million) to enable implementation of Fiji's agreed priorities in social and climate resilience, health and infrastructure, inclusive growth and fiscal sustainability.
- Australian funding to the Fijian government and local organisations helped to strengthen their critical work on women's right and protection, economic empowerment. gender equality and elimination of gender-based violence. Australian funding in the development of Fiji Women Economic Empowerment National Action Plan.
- Partnerships between Australian and Fijian institutions supported capacity and capability building, and institutional strengthening in key government agencies and the private sector.
- Australian funding has built nine schools on Vanua Levu and will support rehabilitation of Taveuni and Kadavu hospitals and has been widely recognised for its quality, flexibility, speed, and use of local resources.
