The Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) is one of the poorest regions in the Middle East. Australia’s development cooperation is a demonstration of our commitment to support enduring peace and a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace and security within internationally recognised borders.
Australia has a long history of supporting Palestinians. Our development cooperation focuses on inclusive economic growth and basic services for refugees. Australia continues to call for safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access to and within Gaza for the delivery of lifesaving humanitarian assistance. Australia has committed $72.5 million in humanitarian assistance this year on top of our $32.2 million ODA commitment, including to address essential needs in Gaza and respond to the protracted refugee crisis in the region.
Strategic direction
Australia’s development assistance to the OPTs and to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, reflects and responds to urgent humanitarian needs, the protracted refugee crisis in the region and supports Australia’s interest in a stable and secure Middle East.
Program highlights
- Through our partnership with UNRWA, over the last year, Australia’s support has contributed to:
- social protection measures for more than 325,000 people
- support for women entrepreneurs.
- Through our partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross, Australia supported capacity-building assistance and various medical supplies and resources to several Palestinian emergency responders who assisted 1.8 million people who needed emergency assistance.
- The Australia Awards program contributed to the education of future leaders in areas of economic recovery and long-term resilience. We continue to support Palestinians to undertake Masters level study in Australia.
