52nd Session of the Human Rights Council

CANZ National Statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, 15 March 2023 (CAN led)

On behalf of Australia, New Zealand and Canada, we welcome the Special Rapporteur’s report celebrating the achievements of human rights defenders since the adoption of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders 25 years ago.

It is undeniable that human rights defenders drive positive change. At the local, national, and international levels, they have encouraged greater accountability for human rights violations and abuses, supported democratic governance, influenced policy change, and helped advance sustainable development. We recognize the need for allyship; only through meaningful collaboration with human rights defenders can we continue to advance respect for human rights.

The resilience and bravery of human rights defenders in the face of adversity does not go unnoticed by our governments. Their work can be dangerous: for themselves, their loved ones and their communities and organizations. This risk is heightened for people in vulnerable and marginalized situations, and for those with intersecting identities. We strongly condemn violence, harassment, reprisals and human rights violations and abuses against human rights defenders. Facilitating safe, enabling and inclusive environments, both online and offline, is critical to their safety and work.

We are committed to championing the work of human rights defenders, including young activists; amplifying their experiences; countering narratives that discredit their work; and engaging them on opportunities to ensure a better future.

Special Rapporteur, what are some best practices for meaningful engagement and capacity building of young defenders?
