52nd Session of the Human Rights Council

National Statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Islamic Republic of Iran, 20 March 2023

Australia thanks the Special Rapporteur for this sobering report.

Following the tragic death of Mahsa Jina Amini, respect for human rights in Iran has deteriorated even further.

Iran’s execution of protesters, increased use of the death penalty, attacks on children, mass arrests, arbitrary detention, and other draconian measures employed to subjugate Iranians peacefully exercising their right to protest, mark a sinister turning point.

Australia condemns Iran’s systemic oppression of women and girls. The Special Rapporteur's accounts of gender-based and sexual violence, and rape and torture of children and young people, are utterly reprehensible.

Iran’s systematic targeting of ethnic minorities is deplorable.

Australia condemns the events of ‘Bloody Friday’ when on 22 December 2022, Iranian authorities mercilessly killed over sixty Baluchi protestors. The actions of Iranian security forces who unleashed senseless violence on Kurdish demonstrators in Sanandaj through October and November are reprehensible.

We are also deeply concerned by Iran’s continued persecution of members of the Baha’i faith, with an appalling increase in raids on homes, arbitrary arrests, and property confiscations.

How can the international community support your call for Iran to immediately release all those arbitrarily detained?
