52nd Session of the Human Rights Council

National Statement on General Debate Item 4, 22 March 2023

There is clear evidence Russia is committing war crimes and human rights violations in Ukraine. It must be held to account. We call on Russia to also respect human rights domestically, including freedom of expression and association.

Australia is seriously concerned about the treatment of women and girls, ethnic minorities such as the Baloch and Kurdish peoples, and members of the Baha’i faith in Iran. We strongly support UN efforts to investigate human rights violations.

Australia deplores widespread human rights violations perpetrated by the government of the DPRK. We urge the DPRK to cooperate with UN accountability mechanisms.

Australia calls on the military regime in Myanmar to immediately cease its serious human rights violations against the Rohingya and other ethnic minorities.

Australia holds grave concerns about severe human rights violations in Xinjiang, which OHCHR’s report found may amount to crimes against humanity. We call on China to urgently address credible findings in the report.

We are very concerned by reports of the erosion of educational, religious, cultural and linguistic rights and freedoms in Tibet.

Australia will continue to call out states that commit egregious human rights violations and insist on accountability.
