Australia’s Sports Diplomacy Strategy 2032+

Summary of publication

Australia’s Sports Diplomacy Strategy 2032+ (the Strategy) sets out a new vision for Australia’s sports diplomacy. It contains nine actions to achieve a range of goals, including to: elevate sport as a tool of national power; focus on efforts in the Indo-Pacific; project modern Australia; advance gender equality and disability equity; strengthen regional resilience through development programs; boost economic growth; strengthen Australian leadership in sport, globally; and strengthen integrity frameworks in international sport.

The Strategy positions the nation to take advantage of the opportunities presented by increased international interest in Australian sporting excellence during and beyond this ‘green and gold decade’, while also managing the challenges that Australian sporting organisations increasingly face around the world. It connects Australia’s current sports diplomacy priorities to DFAT’s established Pacific programs: PacificAus Sports, which develops high-performance pathways for Pacific athletes, coaches and administrators; and Team Up, the sport for development program in the Pacific. It outlines linkages with other related strategies, including on gender equality, disability equity and development, and highlights the potential for economic growth.

Australia’s Sports Diplomacy Strategy 2032+ is also a key to delivering Sport Horizon – Australia’s national sport strategy for 2024-2034, which includes ‘international engagement’ as one of six priorities.
