50th Session of the Human Rights Council
Australia thanks the Special Rapporteur for her latest report. We express serious concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus. We are deeply disappointed by Belarus’ lack of cooperation with international human rights mechanisms and culture of impunity.
Australia notes with regret the approaching second anniversary of the flawed Presidential elections. Australia calls for the immediate release of all individuals arbitrarily detained for exercising their legitimate rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of opinion and expression, and freedom of association.
This is the same government that not only represses its own citizens but has also aided Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Australia strongly condemns the Belarusian Government’s role in this unprovoked, unjustified and illegal invasion.
We regret Belarus’ Criminal Code has been amended to impose the death penalty for attempted acts of terrorism. Australia reiterates its longstanding call for Belarus to abolish the death penalty.
We note with concern the Special Rapporteur’s finding that civic space in Belarus has been virtually eradicated. Australia asks what can be done to protect Belarusians’ legitimate rights to freedom of opinion and expression?
