50th Session of the Human Rights Council
Australia thanks the High Commissioner for her report.
We are increasingly concerned by the deteriorating situation in Sudan. The disproportionate use of force against civilian protesters and the targeted, arbitrary detention of civil society and pro-democracy figures must end. We call for the immediate release of those still detained.
We are concerned by the escalating intercommunal violence in Darfur, and reports of over 60,000 people being displaced. Human rights violations and abuses must be credibly investigated, and perpetrators held to account.
The rights of the people of Sudan to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association must be ensured. We urge Sudan to ensure a safe and enabling environment for journalists to carry out their vital work.
We are deeply concerned that the deteriorating security and human rights environment has seen increased rates of sexual and gender-based violence and violence against children. We urge Sudan to combat this scourge and ensure accountability. Women’s participation in political processes will be essential to achieving gender equality and to supporting sustainable peace.
Madame High Commissioner: How can the international community encourage parties to negotiate in good faith towards a return to a civilian-led democratic transition process and halt violence that could lead to further instability.
