50th Session of the Human Rights Council

National Statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, 20 June 2022

Australia thanks the Special Rapporteur for her report.

We share the Special Rapporteur's concern regarding the lack of training for medical personnel in meeting the needs of LGBTI persons, and the high rates of mental health concerns and suicide attempts among LGBTI people.

We welcome the Special Rapporteur's focus on the importance of adopting a non-binary approach to gender and gender-based violence under the right to health.

Australia's health strategies, services and programs include a range of LGBTI-responsive measures. We are supporting young LGBTI persons through LGBTI-sensitive suicide prevention measures, including a digital platform where gender and sexually-diverse youth can connect with others and seek peer support.

The safety and security of both health workers and their patients and clients is critical to quality, accessible health services for all. Intersex persons are particularly discouraged from seeking health services as they are often subjected to discriminatory and humiliating, or inappropriate treatment. This needs to change.

We ask the Special Rapporteur how we can eliminate the stigma that prevents LGBTI persons from accessing the health services they need.
