50th Session of the Human Rights Council

National Statement during the Interactive Dialogue on the High Commissioner’s oral update on Myanmar, 14 June 2022

Australia thanks the High Commissioner for her update.

Australia is deeply concerned about the situation in Myanmar, including the sharp deterioration in the humanitarian, security, health and economic conditions.

Australia strongly condemns the ongoing use of violence against civilians and other egregious human rights violations. We condemn the military regime’s reported plans to execute pro-democracy leaders and activists. Australia opposes the death penalty in all circumstances for all people.

We urge the military regime to cease violence and release all those unjustly detained, including Australian Professor Sean Turnell, and return Myanmar to the path of democracy.

Australia strongly supports ASEAN’s leadership to resolve the crisis. We urge the military regime to honour its commitment to ASEAN leaders to urgently implement the Five-Point Consensus.

Accountability is key for ending impunity and breaking the cycle of violence. Australia remains committed to supporting international efforts to pursue accountability for war crimes and atrocities committed in Myanmar, including through our longstanding support for the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar. We remind the military regime that the international community will hold it to account, including through robust support to the IIMM and other justice mechanisms.

In addition to these accountability efforts, we ask the High Commissioner how we can best support international efforts to prevent further atrocities?
