Agriculture, fisheries, and the broader food system are on the front line of climate change. Nearly half of households in the Indo-Pacific depend on agriculture or fisheries for their livelihoods, food and nutrition security. Climate change can impact on all dimensions of the food system, from production, processing, distribution and consumption.

Strategic direction
Australia's agricultural development investments prioritise five key areas:
- Adapting agriculture to be more climate resilient.
- Increasing incomes and livelihood opportunities for smallholder farmers.
- Strengthening food and nutrition security.
- Promoting gender equality and inclusion in food systems.
- Improving plant, animal and soil health and biodiversity.
Our investments combine genuine partnership, locally-led development solutions with cutting edge research and development expertise to support local, regional and global food system resilience.
Our programs work to:
- Engage with communities and policy makers on climate resilient agriculture planning.
- Support farmers to adapt to climate change with climate resilient agriculture practices.
- Support smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs, particularly women, to meet their livelihood and food and nutrition security needs.
- Mobilise whole of Australian Government support for surveillance, response and preparedness for emerging biosecurity threats.
- Advocate for more open agricultural trading systems, through international and regional fora.
Program highlights
- Supported the Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT) to conserve and distribute climate resilient food crops across the Pacific.
- Reached 32,684 Pacific farmers with planting materials, land preparation and training on sustainable agricultural practices.
- Strengthened food security and nutrition for farmers in the atoll states of Tuvalu and Kiribati through climate resilient farming practices.
- Increased livestock disease surveillance, diagnosis and management capacity in Timor-Leste.
- Working with the private sector to increase the availability of agricultural inputs in the Pacific.
Supporting agricultural research in the Pacific, Asia and Africa through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
