Australia’s relationship with Mongolia is longstanding and broad, spanning trade, investment, diplomatic and people-to-people links, defence and development cooperation.

The Australia Awards program in Mongolia has been working to support knowledge transfer and people-to-people links between the two countries for over 30 years. Over 750 Mongolian alumni ('Mozzies') have benefited from Australian tertiary education and now support Mongolia's development.
Australia continues to assist in Mongolia's economic development through building human resource capacity in the public and private sectors, as well as through supporting an open, inclusive and well-managed economy.

Strategic direction

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals, Australia's development cooperation program in Mongolia aims to:

  • build human capacity through the provision of Australia Award scholarships and fellowships
  • improve the governance of the extractive sector to increase trade and investment opportunities.

Program highlights

  • In 2023-24, we awarded 15 Australia Awards Scholarships, ran three short courses and one Australian Professional Opportunity on intellectual property rights.
  • Our support through the Australia Mongolia Extractives Program, which concluded this year, strengthened awareness on performance and compliance standards, including a more inclusive and responsible mining sector that considers communities and climate change.
  • Australia provided $250,000 in humanitarian support in response to Mongolia's 2024 "dzud" – an extreme cold weather event.
  • The annual Women's Leadership Program is improving the leadership skills of Australian Awards alumni from the public, private and civil society sectors.
  • We support Mongolia to improve human capacity through a Cooperative Technical and Vocation Education and Training program.
  • We are building women's resilience to climate change through the Enhancing Women's Climate Resilience in Mongolia program.
