51st Session of the Human Rights Council
Australia thanks the Independent Expert and reiterates our support for her mandate.
We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Somalia fuelled by the catastrophic drought, ongoing conflict and terrorism.
Within this context, we congratulate Somalia on the conclusion of its electoral process and peaceful transfer of power. We urge the new Government to uphold its commitments to international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
The reported high levels of sexual and gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation, and grave violations against children in Somalia, are deeply concerning. Australia calls on the Government of Somalia to implement concrete measures that promote and protect the human rights of women and children, and hold perpetrators to account.
Australia condemns violence targeting journalists in Somalia, intimidation against the media, and restrictions on freedom of expression. We urge Somalia to protect media freedom, which promotes a strong democratic culture.
We note the Independent Expert’s recommendation to remove all barriers to women’s full participation in political and public life, and ask how the international community, through the Women, Peace and Security agenda, can support this work?
