51st Session of the Human Rights Council

Interactive Dialogue on report of Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights on Sri Lanka, 12 September 2022

Australia thanks you for your comprehensive report and notes the Government of Sri Lanka’s engagement.

As a long-standing partner, Australia is committed to supporting Sri Lanka implement its transitional justice and accountability commitments and international human rights obligations.

We recognise your concerns, including: marginalisation and differential treatment of minority communities; surveillance and intimidation of civil society; recent responses to peaceful protest, including the use of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and the situation of long-term detainees under the Act.

Peace, social cohesion, strong and independent institutions and an open civic space are vital enablers for sustainable economic recovery and the enjoyment of human rights.

While recognising current economic challenges, we encourage the Government of Sri Lanka to renew its efforts towards truth, justice and accountability and work with all stakeholders to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to deliver peacebuilding and transitional justice measures.

Acknowledging recent commitments to further reform of counterterrorism legislation, we encourage continued efforts to ensure Sri Lanka’s legal framework aligns with international standards.
