51st Session of the Human Rights Council
Australia thanks the Panellists for their presentations, which remind us of the enduring impacts of climate change. Notably, climate change will directly impact on the full and effective enjoyment of human rights, including livelihoods and the right to work.
This is particularly so in the Pacific, where leaders have declared a climate emergency and reaffirmed that climate change remains the single greatest threat to livelihoods.
Our global movement to a net-zero economy could not be more pressing. Australia and our partners are urgently moving to support the development of new clean energy industries and the decarbonisation of existing industries.
Our transition must be managed carefully. It must be socially just, inclusive and sustainable. At the same time, we must harness the opportunities it presents to create inclusive and enabling environments for all members of our communities – for Indigenous peoples, for women and gender diverse people, for people with disabilities and for youth.
We ask the Panel for best practice examples on supporting a clean energy transition that promotes and protects the right to work in a gender responsive and socially inclusive way.
