51st Session of the Human Rights Council

Interactive Dialogue with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights report on Myanmar, 22 September 2022

Australia thanks the Acting High Commissioner for her update.

Australia remains deeply concerned about the crisis in Myanmar, including the deteriorating humanitarian, security, health and economic situation.

Australia continues to call on the Myanmar military regime to end violence against civilians, engage in dialogue, release those unjustly detained and allow safe unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance to support the needs of those in vulnerable situations, including women and girls.

Australia strongly supports ASEAN’s leadership to resolve the crisis. We urge the military to honour its commitment to ASEAN leaders to implement the Five Point Consensus swiftly and completely.

Australia supports calls for a global arms embargo and calls on member states to prevent the flow of arms into Myanmar. We urge those countries providing arms and enabling matériel to Myanmar to cease doing so.

Acting High Commissioner, Australia asks how we can best support international efforts to prevent the flow of arms and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access to support the people of Myanmar?
