51st Session of the Human Rights Council
Australia thanks the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar for their update.
We continue to be deeply concerned by the situation in Myanmar. Australia condemns ongoing human rights abuses and violations of international law by the military regime.
The deteriorating situation since the February 2021 military coup underscores the urgency of redoubling efforts to ensure justice and accountability for crimes committed against the Myanmar people. Australia joined international partners last month in issuing a statement marking the fifth anniversary of the military’s violent attacks against Rohingya.
We reiterate our ongoing support for your work to document abuses and hold accountable those responsible for serious violations of international law in Myanmar since 2011. We call on states to cooperate and support the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar and other accountability mechanisms in Myanmar.
We urge the military to refrain from further violence and engage in constructive dialogue. We further call on them to create conditions to allow the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of the Rohingya.
Australia asks how Indo-Pacific regional states can better support you in delivering on your mandate, as endorsed by this Council?
