51st Session of the Human Rights Council

Interactive Dialogue on the Oral Update of OHCHR on technical assistance and capacity-building for South Sudan, 4 October 2022

Australia thanks the Acting High Commissioner for her update and welcomes the support to improve human rights in South Sudan.

Australia was disappointed by the further delay to elections but welcomes the agreed roadmap to complete South Sudan’s democratic transition. Australia calls on all parties to the Revitalised Peace Agreement to implement remaining benchmarks and ensure free, fair and secure elections are held according to the agreed timeframe.

We are concerned at the ongoing insecurity and displacement of civilians which is exacerbating already dire levels of food insecurity. South Sudan also remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for humanitarian workers. It is vital that authorities do all in their power to protect civilians and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.

Australia remains deeply concerned by high rates of conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence, as well as the continued recruitment and use of children by armed groups. Noting the importance of effective justice for victims, and for ending the culture of impunity, Australia asks for an update on assistance to strengthen South Sudan’s rule of law institutions.
