Australia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) share a long history of close engagement and work together to promote a peaceful, prosperous and resilient region.
Australia is proud to partner with the Government and people of RMI to respond pragmatically to RMI's priorities.
Strategic direction
Including economic development, COVID-19 recovery, climate change action, gender equality and the enhancement of regional connectivity Australia and RMI will work in partnership to build stronger people-to-people links. We will continue to support Marshallese students to study at institutions in Australia and the region through Australia Awards Scholarships.
Australia will continue to listen and consult with RMI to ensure the development program remains fit for purpose and aligns with mutual long-term development priorities.
Program highlights
- During Minister Wong's visit to RMI in October 2022, she announced a five-year, $2.5 million climate initiative to implement components of RMI's National Adaptation Plan. The initiative will strengthen water and food security and support climate governance and advocacy (SDG13).
- Australia is providing $3 million to a multi-partner project that supports RMI to adapt to increasing climate risks. The project is supporting water security interventions that will build resilience from disaster and climate-induced drought impact (SDG6).
- Australia's Pacific Flights Program facilitated the re-establishment of regular commercial flights connecting RMI to Australia, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati and Nauru. It continues to support access to international ports and markets (SDG10).
- Australia assists RMI to improve sexual health outcomes among youth and women through regular safety checks of health facilities and provision of additional reproductive health materials in outer atolls (SDG3; SDG5).
